situations\u00a0where technological feasibility, accompanied with\u00a0appropriate theory-of-computation reasoning,\u00a0impacts\u00a0not only specific laws and regulations, but also some basic legal\u00a0doctrines. Specifically,\u00a0these are\u00a0situations where\u00a0justified secrecy and privacy rights regarding sensitive information is pitted against equally justified\u00a0transparency, accountability,\u00a0and due process rights pertaining to the same information. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"en-DK\">Current legal doctrines accept the seemingly inevitable reality the not all rights can be honored, and instead\u00a0aim\u00a0at\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;balancing the harms&#8221;\u00a0on all sides.\u00a0\u00a0 In sharp\u00a0contrast,\u00a0cryptographic concepts such as\u00a0Zero-Knowledge Proofs\u00a0and Secure Multi-Party Computation\u00a0enable legal processes that\u00a0do honor all rights.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"en-DK\">Moreover, these technologies enable fine-grained delineation\u00a0of what partial\u00a0information should be disclosed and to whom,\u00a0thus opening the door to more nimble legal doctrines and thinking regarding the ownership, sharing,\u00a0and use of information\u00a0in a modern society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The talk will be mostly based on the following two papers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kenneth Bamberger, -, Shafi Goldwasser,\u00a0 Rebecca Wexler, Evan Zimmerman:\u00a0 Verification Dilemmas in Law and the Promise of Zero-Knowledge Proofs.\u00a0 Berkeley Technology Law Journal, Vol. 37, No. 1 (2022).<\/li>\n<li>Dor Bitan, -, Shafi Goldwasser, Rebecca Wexler: Using Zero-Knowledge to Reconcile Law Enforcement Secrecy and Fair Trial Rights in Criminal Cases.  >\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRan Canetti\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-icon-box-description\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\tRan Canetti is a professor of Computer Science in Boston University, where he directs the center for Reliable Information System and Cyber Security. He is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery\u00a0 and the International Association for Cryptologic Research, and an incumbent of the RSA Award in Mathematics.<br><br>\r\n\r\nCanetti\u2019s research interests lie primarily in\u00a0 cryptography and information security, with emphasis on the design, analysis and use of cryptographic algorithms and protocols.
