New tool aims to strenghten security in "extremely vulnerable" critical infrastructure

Water pumps, power grids, and production lines are at risk of cyberattacks because the systems are old and “extremely vulnerable.” New research now seeks to tackle the problem.

Waterworks, power plants, and other critical infrastructure are filled with old and fragile systems, making them susceptible to cyberattacks.

If these systems fail, it could, in the worst case, cause the power grid to go down, tap water to disappear, or factory production to stop. A new research project called ClearSight now aims to make these old and vulnerable systems more secure with a new tool that checks security and detects suspicious behavior.

The tool is being developed by researchers from DTU, and according to the plan, it will later be tested on infrastructure in Ukraine in collaboration with the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.

The purpose of the project is to develop an “intelligent monitoring system” that oversees critical and vulnerable systems via the internet.

The monitoring tool checks whether systems and equipment are secure and sends an alert if it detects suspicious behavior.
