What if the next Frontier AI Lab was built in the Nordics?

SPRIND is launching a €125M Challenge to create three European Frontier AI Labs
…and we hope to see outstanding Nordic teams among the contenders!

What is Next Frontier AI?

SPRIND (Germany’s Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation) is launching a €125M equity-free challenge to support up to 10 frontier AI teams over 24 months.

Up to three winners will then receive support to raise approximately €1B each to scale their labs.

Calling Nordic Builders, Innovators and Entrepreneurs

We are joining forces with SPRIND to invite the Nordic ecosystem – together with Pioneer Centre AI (P1), AI Sweden, NORA – The Norwegian Artificial Intelligence Research Consortium, Aalto University, and others – to participate!

We are looking for:

  • Researchers working on foundations models, agentic systems, or next-generation AI architectures
  • PhD students or postdocs in ML/AI with ambitions beyond academia
  • Engineers from frontier labs (DeepMind, Meta AI, etc.) considering starting their own lab
  • Teams exploring radically new approaches (SSMs, world models, neuro-symbolic AI, efficient training paradigms)
  • Individuals at big labs asking, “Could I do this myself?”

Timeline

  • May 2026: Application period opens
  • 29 May 2026: Application deadline
  • June 2026: Proposal screening and pitch
  • July 2026: Up to 10 teams funded
  • Fall 2028: Up to 3 winners announced and supported to raise up to €1B
